Welcome to Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust
Maungatautari is an exciting place to visit – with 47kms of predator proof fence enclosing 3,400 hectares in a sea of pastureland, it is the largest ecological island on mainland New Zealand.
With the eradication of mammalian predators largely complete native bird populations are being re-introduced and trees and ferns are able to grow uninhibited. This provides for a surprising new environment as the balance of species develops.
We invite you to "share the dream".
Hihi Sightings Wanted
As part of her PhD project Kate Richardson is monitoring hihi habitats on the mountain. Please report any sightings of hihi at large on the mountain i.e. outside of the Southern Enclosure. If you have binoculars and can identifiy the colour combinations of their leg bands all the better.
Please call Cathy on 07 823 7455 if you have any information.
